Roller blinds are a great addition to your home. They come in a variety of styles to suit your look, help to control the light and temperature within your space, and promote privacy. Plus, they can do all this while still allowing you to see outside when you choose.Â
As with many features around the home, roller blinds can get dirty. Dust, mould, and debris can affect them, but the great thing is that roller blinds are easy to keep clean. With a few simple steps, you can maintain your roller blinds’ stylish appearance and longevity. If more persistent marks and stains are present, these too can usually be removed with a deep clean.Â
At Complete Blinds, we stock a wide range of durable roller blinds and are always happy to give advice regarding how to take care of them and keep them looking great.Â

Cleaning Roller Blinds Without Taking Them Down
Most of the time, you will be able to clean your roller blinds without having to remove them from the window they are attached to, especially when the goal is to keep them free of dirt and grime. You can do this by using a vacuum cleaner and/or a cloth.Â
If your blinds consist of vinyl-treated material, PVC, or wipeable fabric, use a damp cloth to gently wipe the entire surface clean with warm, soapy water while they are in a fully extended position, moving from top to bottom in a side-to-side motion. Let them dry completely before closing them, as mould can grow otherwise. We are happy to discuss what cleaning products you can use on your specific blinds.
If your blinds are not waterproof, use the brush attachment on the vacuum cleaner to remove the dirt. You can also vacuum waterproof blinds before wiping them if required. Begin from the top and work down the full length of the extended blinds in a sideways motion. Chat with us if you are unsure whether your blinds are waterproof.Â
Cleaning Persistent Stains From Roller Blinds By SoakingÂ
If your roller blinds have not been cleaned for some time, or if there are persistent stains on them, you may need to perform a deep clean. For this, you will need a vessel in which you can soak them, such as a bath, and a few cleaning elements.Â
Firstly, you will need to remove your roller blinds from their bracket. If you are unsure how to do this, we can provide you with guidance regarding the correct way. Open the blinds up enough that the water will access all surfaces. Next, submerge the blinds in warm, soapy water for about an hour. You may need to gently scrub specific areas with a cloth or brush if stubborn stains have not budged.Â
Empty the bath and then run clean water over the blinds to rinse off the soap and remaining debris by using the bath tap or shower head. The blinds must be allowed to dry completely. Spread them out and drape or hang them over items that will let the air get to all surfaces, ideally in the open air and sunshine. You can return your roller blinds to their usual spot when they are clean and dry.

Removing Mould From Roller BlindsÂ
If your roller blinds have mould or mildew on them, it can become a health issue, so it is important to remove it. You can take the previously mentioned steps to do so, and use a solution consisting of lemon juice, salt, and water. It may be a good idea to wear a mask while carrying out this task to reduce the risk of breathing in the mould.Â
Â
How Often Do Roller Blinds Need Cleaning?Â
Giving your roller blinds a general clean should be done regularly to prevent build-up and stains. This can be about two times a month, but depending on where you live, you may need to clean them more frequently.Â
Keep Your Roller Blinds Looking Great With Regular Cleaning
Maintaining your roller blinds is an easy job that can be slotted into your regular house cleaning routine. Simple upkeep can prevent stains and grime build-up that can be more difficult to remove. Fortunately, cleaning roller blinds does not need expensive equipment. It is just a matter of taking the advised steps. Â
Keep in mind that it is important to identify what your roller blinds are made of to determine which cleaning process to use and that making sure they are kept dry during use is required to reduce the chance of mould developing. Â
At Complete Blinds, we stock a great variety of roller blinds and are here to help you choose which will suit your home and requirements. We can also provide advice about how to look after them, so feel free to get in touch!
